Finish carpentry refers to the specialized woodworking tasks involved in adding the final touches and details to a construction or remodeling project. It’s the stage of carpentry that comes after the structural and framing work is completed. Finish carpenters focus on enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of a space by working on elements such as:
Doors: Finish carpenters hang doors and install door frames for both interior and exterior applications.
Trim Work: This includes installing baseboards, crown molding, chair rails, and other decorative moldings to give rooms a polished and finished appearance.
Cabinetry: Finish carpenters build and install custom cabinets, shelves, and storage solutions in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home.
Built-Ins: This includes creating and installing built-in furniture like bookshelves, entertainment centers, and window seats.
Moldings and Millwork: They craft and install various architectural details like wainscoting, coffered ceilings, and decorative wall panels.
Closet Systems: Finish carpenters design and install customized closet organization systems to maximize storage space.
Stairs: They construct and install interior staircases, handrails, and balusters, paying close attention to safety and aesthetics.
Finish carpentry requires a high level of precision and attention to detail, as it’s the stage where the overall look and feel of a space are defined. Skilled finish carpenters ensure that everything fits perfectly and looks aesthetically pleasing, adding the final layer of craftsmanship and functionality to a building or renovation project.
The duration of a finish carpentry project can vary widely depending on several factors, including the scope and complexity of the project, the size of the space, and any customizations or intricate details involved. However, here are some general guidelines:
Small Projects: Tasks like installing a single interior door or baseboard in a small room usually take a day or less.
Medium-Sized Projects: Projects such as installing cabinetry in a kitchen or bathroom, along with trim work, typically range from a few days to one to two weeks.
Large Projects: For more extensive tasks like hanging many interior doors, installing extensive trim throughout a home, and cabinetry installation, you can expect the project to last several weeks.
Custom or Intricate Work: If your project involves intricate designs, complex customizations, or highly detailed millwork, it may extend the timeline significantly.
Finish carpentry involves working with various materials to create the final touches and details in a construction or renovation project. Common materials used in finish carpentry include:
Wood: Wood is a fundamental material in finish carpentry. It’s used for doors, window frames, trim, moldings, baseboards, and custom cabinetry. Hardwood, softwood, and engineered wood products are all used, depending on the specific application and desired aesthetics.
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard): MDF is a popular choice for trim and moldings due to its smooth surface and excellent paint-holding capabilities, resulting in a flawless finish. However, it’s important to note that MDF is susceptible to moisture damage. At Betts Fine Carpentry, we recommend using real wood in areas prone to humidity or moisture, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and exterior doors.
Plywood: Plywood is used for sheathing, cabinet construction, and can also be incorporated into certain finish carpentry projects where strength and stability are important.
Adhesives and Fasteners: Various adhesives, nails, screws, and other fasteners are used to secure and join different materials.
The selection of materials depends on factors such as your budget, design preferences, durability requirements, and the specific needs of your project. Choosing the right materials is essential to achieve your desired aesthetic and functionality while ensuring the longevity of the finished work.

No, you don’t necessarily need to have all the materials ready before starting a project with Betts Fine Carpentry. We understand that sourcing materials can be a complex process, and we’re here to assist you every step of the way.
Here’s how we typically handle materials:
Material Recommendations: During our initial consultation, we’ll discuss the materials needed for your project. Based on your preferences, style, and budget, we’ll provide recommendations for suitable materials.
Material Procurement: Once you approve the project and material choices, we can assist in procuring the necessary materials. We have access to quality suppliers and can ensure that the materials meet the specifications required for your project.
Timing: We’ll coordinate the timing of material procurement to align with the project schedule. This helps ensure that the materials are on-site when needed, minimizing delays.
Transparency: We maintain transparent communication throughout the process, keeping you informed about material costs and delivery timelines.
While we can assist in sourcing and procuring materials, you are also welcome to provide your own materials if you have specific preferences or already have them on hand.
Our goal is to make the process as convenient as possible for you, ensuring that the right materials are available when needed to complete your finish carpentry project successfully.

At Betts Fine Carpentry, we understand that budget considerations are essential for our clients. Our approach to handling project budgets and pricing is transparent and collaborative. Here’s how we typically manage this:
Initial Consultation: We begin with an initial consultation where we discuss your project in detail. This includes your design preferences, scope of work, and budget expectations. Understanding your budget allows us to tailor our recommendations accordingly.
Detailed Estimate: After the consultation, we provide you with a detailed project estimate. This estimate outlines the costs associated with materials, labor, and any additional expenses, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the financial aspects of your project.
Options and Alternatives: If the initial estimate exceeds your budget, we can work together to explore alternative materials, design modifications, or project phasing to align the project with your financial goals while maintaining quality.
Regular Updates: Throughout the project, we maintain open communication regarding budget tracking. You’ll be informed of any changes or unforeseen expenses that may arise during the course of the project.
No Hidden Costs: We believe in transparency, and there are no hidden costs in our pricing. Any adjustments to the budget are discussed and agreed upon with you before any additional work is done.
Ultimately, our aim is to work collaboratively with you to achieve your vision while staying within your budget constraints. We prioritize your satisfaction and will always strive to find the best balance between your project’s scope and your budgetary considerations.
“Kashi is an excellent finish carpenter and I would highly recommend him. I originally hired him to hang interior slab doors. Then, because the quality of his work was so good and he was incredibly professional and great to work with, I ended up hiring him to redo all of the trim. What I appreciated most was his good taste and willingness to provide options.”
